Why some doctors don't take women's pain seriously

Mary's pain is excruciating, but she can't bear the idea of going back to her GP yet again. "My GP doesn't believe me anyway, she thinks it is all in my head".

Mary had worked in a factory for four years, performing the same repetitive tasks every day of the week. She was a valued a worker because she always worked hard, never took sick leave and never complained.

Two years into her job, she started to feel a twinge of pain in one of her wrists, but Mary didn't say anything. She continued to work.

The pain got worse and spread to her other wrist and then to her shoulders and neck. Gradually the pain became her constant shadow, and that shadow had grown darker and darker.

When Mary first visited the doctor, the doctor told her to rest. But rest did not work.
