NikkiJo Tyrrell's Life Has Been 'On Hold' Since She Got Lyme Disease And ME/CFS

NikkiJo Tyrrell's life has been 'on hold' since she got Lyme disease
NikkiJo Tyrrell is one of several New Zealanders whose life is affected by Lyme disease, an infection passed on through the bite of an infected tick that can have debilitating effects. SAMANTHA GEE reports.
As teenager, NikkiJo Tyrrell loved riding horses and playing the piano. When she left school she wanted to study to become a vet.
In a small unit in the seaside village of Mapua, near Nelson, 36-year-old Tyrrell is lying on her couch while she recounts the things she wants to achieve. It's too exhausting for her to sit up while she speaks.
A greenstone whale tail carving hangs around her neck and she is animated when she talks about her plans for the future, she still has the exuberance of a young adult with big dreams.
But for the last 18 years she has battled the effects of Lyme disease and myalgic encephalomyelitis, or chronic fatigue syndrome, that have left her in severe pain, unable to sleep and sometimes suffering several seizures a day.
