Australian Open: Ash Barty exits disappointed with missed chance

Ash Barty exited the Australian Open disappointed she could not convert a chance she created for herself in her third-round match against Germany’s Mona Barthel last night [Friday 20 January].


They were each on their own comeback journeys: Barty giving tennis a second crack after she fell out of love with the game two years ago and took up cricket and Barthel because she fell away for 12 months through illness — chronic fatigue syndrome.

“I had a really tough year last year. I didn’t know if I could play tennis again and here I am in the fourth round. So I’m very happy,” the German said.
