Books by Paul Gregory
Tuesday 19 July 2011
We've received an email from UK psychologist and ME/CFS sufferer Paul Gregory:
I have been a sufferer of ME for 30 years and have written two books on the subject.
Please would you bring these two books to the attention of the members of your ME support group.
Enclosed as an attachment is information about a new book 'The Psychology of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME & Self-Management' and an existing book 'Refined in the Furnace of Affliction. Nearly 30 years with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME'.
The latter details a 'natural experiment' in which I describe the onset of CFS/ME, the course of the illness and the effects of various treatments implemented over a period of nearly 30 years.
I have had a career as an educational psychologist, first working with a local education authority and later privately.
I hope you find them interesting.
If anyone would like to post their review of my books: at http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/book/9781906459192/ for the 'Refined in the Furnace of Affliction book' and http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/book/9781906459291/ for the Psychology book.
I would be very grateful.
I have a website at www.paulgregorycfsmebooks.org.uk.
Here are the details of the books:
Refined in the Furnace of Affliction: Nearly 30 years with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/M.E.
This book is a case-study of the author’s own illness; a natural experiment as it turns out – describing what led up to the illness, its severity and how he – a psychologist - managed to improve by developing a spiritual life of optimism from the beautiful words and quotations listed in the book. It is an epistle of hope for even the most severe of cases. Described in the final part is recent scientific research about ways of improving the condition, including the story of how Ester Rantzen’s daughter Emily – severely affected by ME - improved. Reviews welcome.

The Psychology of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME & Self-Management
By the same author, this book describes the psychology of illness, chronic illness and CFS/ME. The power of the mind and beliefs in illness are discussed followed by a system for learning/teaching self-management of chronic illness. There are many self-scoring questionnaires for use by the reader or professionals with their clients and all of this is set out within a bio-psycho-social-environmental framework.
