The Seaway M.E. /FM Self Help Group held a gathering on May 12 at Lamoureux Park to celebrate National Awareness Day for M.E. /FM in Canada. Denise Hurtubise, Vice-President of the group, said the afternoon was also an opportunity to make awareness of the local self help group.

M.E. (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) is better known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and FM (Fibromyalgia) is a chronic and complex disorder of the musculoskeletal system. Hurtubise says there is a significant overlap of symptoms between the two illnesses and that researchers believe the conditions are related.

The Seaway M.E. /FM Self Help Group is open to anyone with either of the two illnesses and was founded in 1992 by the late Sheila McCarthy. Along with MP Guy Lauzon and MPP Jim Brownell, the group gathered beside a tree and plaque that was laid in honour of McCarthy in 2009.

“We chose this location for our gathering in memory of her dedication to make awareness of these illnesses,” explained Hurtubise. “We would like to stress that our group has no funding whatsoever from individuals, or municipal, provincial or federal levels. We are in need of funding.”

For more information or to make a donation please contact Treasurer Lynn Beaudette at 613-938-8379 or Denise Hurtubise at 613-938-3615.

“Due to our limitation because of our disability, it is very difficult to do fundraisers. We offer aquatic exercises for therapeutic treatment for those suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia at the Aquatic Centre at a yearly cost. With no funding, it puts stress on the group to make up the difference in cost,” said Hurtubise.
